Sleights village visitor guide

Sleights is a charming village located on the edge of the stunning North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This pretty village offers a great choice of attractions including shops, tea rooms, churches as well as scenic walking paths. There is a bus and railway service close by allowing guests the opportunity to explore surrounding areas.
Railway station
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway passes through Sleights during the peak season where the steam train continues on to Grosmont and Pickering. This historic railway offers a fantastic experience for guests of all ages. Trains are available into the seaside town of Whitby and Pickering throughout the year.
The Spar grocery shop
A Spar shop is located in the heart of Sleights offering a great range of groceries as well as essentials such as toiletries. The store operates good opening hours and also offers a free to use cash machine. Inside the Spar is a separate post office allowing you to send parcels.
Bothams Bakery
About since 1865, Elizabeth Botham & Sons has been a family run craft bakery in the heart of Sleights. This famous bakery is a must see and can often get busy due to its fantastic reputation. Selling all kinds of bakery products from bread to biscuits and cakes this would make the perfect treat for your stay. As well as the bakery they also offer some wonderful gifts to take back home.
Salmon Leap Pub
The Salmon Leap Pub gets its name from the villages “Salmon Leap”, a small weir that enables the salmon between Autumn/Winter, to swim upriver to their spawning grounds. The pub is a popular ale house with a beer garden and offers a great range of traditional pub food.
Radfords Butchers & Delicatessen
Established in 1970 the Radford family have been running this butcher in Sleights for over 40 years. The butchers boast a fantastic range of locally sourced meats whilst the deli counter offers a great range of cooked meats and ready meals. Their famous steak pies are a must have and are still made using the traditional family recipe. There is also a great selection of other deli items including pork pies & vegetable accompaniments.
Eskdale Fishers – fish & chips
For a classic fish and chip supper you can’t go wrong with Eskdale Fisheries. Their food is simply fantastic! The fishers operate as a takeaway and restaurant allowing you to dine in or take the food away to your cottage. Eskdale’s only accept cash so don’t forget to keep some cash with you or use the free cash machine over the road at the Spar.
Perry’s Plant Centre & Café
This charming garden centre and café is a family run business established well over a 100 years ago. Originally a family house with tea rooms the space has been developed over the years with landscaped gardens and a lovely café. The garden centre is now a nursery specialising in unusual plants. The River Gardens Cafe serves cooked meals and home baking all day.
The Plough Inn
The Plough Inn is another fantastic ale house and is conveniently located close to the cottages. The pub offers a great range of facilities including a beer garden, free wifi, dartboards, weekly quiz nights and live sports on TV. Offering a great range of home cooked pub food along with real ale and guest beers each week. There are quite spectacular views across the Esk Valley from the beer garden at the rear.
Sleights Village Hall
This village hall is a lively hub in the centre of the community. The hall hosts a number of different events therefore it’s worthwhile regularly checking the notice board to see if any events would be relevant to you over the duration of your stay. Sleights playground
Sleights play park is a fantastic day for the kids and adults. The play area offers a great choice of play equipment keeping the kids entertained for many hours. The park also boasts a number of benches offering lovely views of Whitby and the Abbey on the cliff top.
St John The Evangelist Church
St Johns Church offers a regular Sunday service. The regular sung Eucharist is every first, third, forth & fifth Sunday at 10.30am for approximately 1 hour. They also offer an all age worship every second Sunday at 10.30am for 45 minutes. Messy church is also held during school holidays. The church is situated on the corner of Coach Road A169 and Iburndale Lane, near the bottom of Blue Bank. There is on the road parking as well as a few spaces in front of the shops at Eskdaleside.
Briggswath & Sleights Methodist Church
The Briggswath & Sleights Methodist Church sits in the beautiful Esk valley close to the river & has been open for nearly 115 years. The church invites guests to join for their regular Sunday service with the congregation open to all ages. Open most days during the week the Church also offers weekday activities and is a great space to relax with members of the local community.
